Popcorn

We all need something salty and crunchy now and then. There a a ton of microwave popcorns out there, but we all know they are not exactly healthy with all the additives and strange oils and artificial flavorings. What you may not know is you don’t need any of that. Just a bowl, a paper bag, and some plain old popcorn. When you are in that aisle at the market look waay down at the bottom past all the “movie theater” and “kettle” flavors and you will find a humble jar of plain popcorn kernels.

Most people don’t know that plain popcorn pops just fine in the microwave, no oil needed. It is a healthy whole grain, quite cheap from the jar – less than 20 cents per serving, and a fun little snack.

Popcorn, a bowl, a paper sack large enough to cover the bowl, butter and salt.
Measure and mark the bag to slightly more than the height of the bowl.
Cut the bag to the measured height.
Perfect!
Make sure it covers completely.
Poof!
Measure two Tablespoons into the bowl.
Cover the bowl with the bag and start at 2 minutes. This is the part where I have to say all microwaves are different and your cooking time will vary depending on your microwave. Stay by the micro until popping slows – or you know you smell burning like the guy at the office always does.
Put your chosen amount of butter into a micro safe container and melt about 30 seconds. See above about micros vary la la la ….

Drizzle with butter, a sprinkle of salt and, enjoy.
Add other flavorings, garlic salt and parm, sugar and spice for bbq, the sky’s the limit.

I have always cooked, I was that person who could make a meal from an empty fridge. I have lived alone and with large and small families, I have cooked for camps on wood stoves, and in professional kitchens. I have lived and worked all over the west from Montana, to Seattle to Arizona to San Diego. I have traveled, maybe not 'all over the world', yet, and have collected tastes recipes and techniques everywhere, and every one I meet.
