Ranch – powder & dressing

Who doesn’t love ranch? We drizzle, dip, slather, and douse it on everything. We use the powder as a seasoning. But again, single servings is hard to come by, and it often goes bad before even the most enthusiastic fan can use it up. Enter homemade ranch powder! But you as how do you make powder, I found a little secret weapon towards that end, and a few other tricks – powdered buttermilk!! Yes, they make that! I found it one day in the baking isle when I was trying to make a single serving biscuit mix (more on that later).

Gather your ingredients. You can use fresh herbs, and adjust it to your tastes. Typical ranch is just buttermilk (acid and fat together) spruced up with herbs and spices. Really, that is it. I used garlic powder, dill, jalapeno powder (I like some spice, I didn’t want to turn it pink with cayenne or paprika), white pepper, celery seed, onion powder, and of course the buttermilk.
Start with a half cup of buttermilk powder.
Mix it all together.
Seal and store.

To make dressing.
Ranch powder, mayo, milk, plain yogurt.
Two tablespoons ranch powder.
Add 1/4 cup each mayo, yogurt. Add milk to the texture, thickness you want.
And there you have it, ranch from your own homemade powder.

I have always cooked, I was that person who could make a meal from an empty fridge. I have lived alone and with large and small families, I have cooked for camps on wood stoves, and in professional kitchens. I have lived and worked all over the west from Montana, to Seattle to Arizona to San Diego. I have traveled, maybe not 'all over the world', yet, and have collected tastes recipes and techniques everywhere, and every one I meet.
